Bernard E

My whole life, I have felt I have a weak upper body, so I would normally skip any strength training and focus on running. I knew I needed to do something different, because I wasn’t seeing the results I wanted the last several years.  AST educated me on the importance of strength training, and my BioSignature showed me that I needed to work my upper body to reach my goals – a leaner, stronger, and healthier body overall.

The BioSignature has been a huge part of my transformation.  It gets me past being a “slave to the scale”, because I have a more targeted view of my body. I understand exactly where my problem areas are and the priority of these areas by measuring my body fat in 12 different sites.  It really sets the stage for my nutrition planning and training program, so I can get results relatively quickly.

I have been coming to AST for about seven months, and the most noticeable changes are that I have lost 7% body fat and over 20 pounds of scale weight. I have gained lean muscle mass, feel more energetic, and sleep better.  I also believe I have better posture, because I am more aware of my body.

At the start of my program, I had high LDL cholesterol at 170, and my doctor put me on a drug. I made sure AST was aware of my issue with cholesterol, so I received some nutrition guidance.  Through the combination of the drug, the changes in nutrition, and my training routine, I was able to lower my LDL cholesterol 50% in three months and went from being “at risk” to “excellent” cholesterol levels.

I love to eat out, and it’s basically a job requirement, because I work in the food business.  With AST’s nutrition guidance, I really had to think seriously about the foods I put into my body.   I had to make a real lifestyle change with my nutrition if I was going to be serious about getting into descent shape.

I started cooking at home most of the time, and planning my meals better – even when I do eat out. I did participate in a two hour nutrition seminar and an afternoon cooking soiree through AST and learned how much better I can do with some healthy recipes and the right cooking equipment.

AST has a range of programs, camps, seminars, and nutritional products, but I have never felt pressured to buy anything.  There is no sales pressure, gimmicks, or complicated contracts, just a straightforward education and training process.  This is truly the best experience from any other places where I have trained.

Finding my way to AST…

I have for a long time believed that eating right and exercising is like a health insurance policy. You just do it and have it. It’s money well spent. After breaking up from the last trainer/coach/gym/program, I knew I needed something and was in the ‘waiting-to-see-what-happens’ phase when a friend who started training at AST invited me in for the free trial. That was 4+ years ago.

The reasons why I’ve stayed with AST…

The #1 reason is Zach and Christine. I love their leadership and the way they’ve structured their business. From my perspective, AST is run with a strong cooperative family spirit, built on hard work, honesty and a solid foundation of excellent information, adaptable execution and visible results. It’s also clear that their skills complement one another.  Zach is the brains behind the science of the human body and how it functions; he’s a master creating workouts that push (or punish?) us for 30 minutes at every session (secretly I think he loves torturing us. He is a complete nerd about nutrition/diet/supplementation/digestion (the guy LIKES reading test results!?!), and the go-to- guy when body parts are hurting. Christine is the powerhouse behind the people there. She runs a tight ship with efficient systems, clear expectations and a lot of love. While I don’t see much of her week to week her fingerprint is everywhere: communications, social media, procedures, scrunchies and tampons! She is also a valuable resource for nutritional information and guidance, meal planning and prep tips and inspiration on top of providing ready-to-eat meals that are ample and tasty. There was a time when all I needed was the plan and the shopping list… Christine to the rescue. Between the two of them, AST is one complete package.

More reasons…

  1. Bi-weekly nutritional consultations. They used to be called bio-sigs. It’s where Zach would pinch you all over to get the pulse on the composition of your body. We now get the same results painlessly with InBody, a scale type apparatus, that does the same thing plus prints a readout and gives a more comprehensive assessment. Personally, I have a love/hate relationship with these but regardless it’s a VALUABLE ASSET to achieving results you after.
  2. The workouts themselves. I believe that when you commit yourself to something you do the best you can. Why waste the time or money, right? So, when I go to the gym I go to get it done by putting everything I have into it. Call me an overachiever but for me it’s all about getting the biggest bang for the buck. When I learned that sessions were typically 30 minutes, I thought, ‘Yeah, this is good!’
  3. The other trainers…all of them (mostly). Several have come and gone but ALL were carefully chosen from, what I imagine, is a really large field. I have been on the sidelines when Zach and Christine were interviewing and geez, they put those guys to the test. Scott and Jackie–the two I train with now–are attentive, skilled and adaptive on the floor. They know how to count and know when to push!

What first brought you to AST?

I had put on about 50 pounds after several years without exercising and my favorite clothes no longer fit me. Someone whose restaurant I’ve regularly visited for the last thirteen years referred me to AST. She went through a significant weight loss and looked healthy, happier and beautiful. I asked her what she did, and then I made an appointment for a consultation. This was in the summer of 2012. Almost five years later, I’m still here.

What kept you with us?

My beginnings at AST were very difficult because I had never before been mentally and physically challenged at this level. It was a sea change, a game changer. I was asked to work far harder than anyone had ever asked me (form, weights, dietary habits, warm-ups, supplements, etc.) There was a significant learning curve and more than anything, a huge “thinking” curve. I had to develop a willingness to ask my body to do things it had never done before. It took a good four or five months to solidify my inner resolve and once that happened, I forged ahead.

In January 2013, I entered the fat loss challenge and to my amazement, I won. That was a major validation. When I signed up at AST, my body fat was in the 24 percents. At the end of that challenge in March or April, I was at 9-something percent. It was an extremely demanding endeavor but I stuck to it like a robot. After winning the challenge, I took part in a boot camp with two other AST members which required us to work out three or four times a week for an hour for several weeks at the bitterly cold crack of dawn. It was a grueling experience. Many expletives were uttered, hollered and growled but still, we kept on going.

These two experiences focused me and in that process, I came to see how much my trainers appreciated my efforts. Faces beamed during biosigs; sincere congratulations were given at the end of workouts; Facebook and Instagram posts were liked. Simply put, I wasn’t alone anymore. I put my hopes for my body and health in my trainers’ hands, and they accepted the responsibility as long as I did my part; my fellow trainees cheered me on and I cheered for them. The only sport I was ever good at was swimming so finding myself succeeding at lifting and running was a big surprise. Even more surprising perhaps was discovering joy in the process. It hadn’t occurred to me that I could actually enjoy working out.

It is in this way that I came to feel a part of a supportive community in which people care for each other. We exchange recipes; we discuss life, work and family; we go to movies, art gallery openings, brunch; we take shopping trips; we fundraise. If someone is having a hard time, we rally around them and offer help. The body work is one thing, but the human work is everything. When one is lucky enough to find a space that is equally committed to the body, the human spirit and the highest levels of ethics and professionalism, one has no choice but to stay. We are in blessed hands here.

What are 3 things on your “bucket list”?

1.    Running a marathon.
2.    Finish writing a novel.
3.    Develop a stronger balance between body and mind.

If you could leave one exercise stranded on a desert island, never to be done again, what would it be?

Bulgarian split squats, ugh.

How has working with AST benefited you?

Being a member of AST has been a very rewarding experience. The biggest benefit with AST is the 2 week body signature assessment. It really helps you to stay on track of your goals and lets you see your results regularly to see if you need to make adjustments in your routine and diet. This is something that you just can’t check on your own.

What are the two most significant improvements that have resulted from your work with us?

Since joining AST I have seen significant improvement in my physique. I carry weight differently now and it is a drastic improvement from before I started weight training!

What have your results been from working with AST?

I have gained 13 lbs of lean mass since starting my training routine with AST! Imagine replacing 13 lbs of fat with 13 lbs of muscle. The feeling is awesome!

Describe why you feel that working with us has been successful.

The biggest contributor to my success is the fact that the trainers at AST DO NOT let you slack off during workouts. Everyone knows what I’m talking about when I say that home workouts by yourself just aren’t as difficult as they could be. Well, at AST I fear my next workout, because I know it’s going to push me harder than the previous one.

What type of people would most benefit from working with AST?

If you have the desire to change the way you look at fitness and diet then All Strength Training is the place for you. You’ll be pushed to limits you haven’t seen since high school. You’ll be covered in sweaty awesomeness from the most intense 30 minute (or 60 minute) workout that you’ve experienced in years, if not decades!

If a potential client was on the fence about whether to work with All Strength Training or not, what would you say to them?

Not sure about joining AST? Try their 10-day free trial. I did. And 8 months later I still have friends coming up to me talking about how much weight I’ve lost and how good I look. So ask yourself this. Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to look good? Do you want to change your old habits? Then I’d start at AST!

How has working with AST benefited you?

Working with AST has helped me form and reach each of my nutrition and fitness goals. I greatly appreciate the regular biosig check-ins to keep me on track and discuss factors that are changing in my day-to-day life. I also appreciate the structured and thoughtful workouts that change every 3 weeks to keep my body in a mode of constant learning and improvement.

What are the two most significant improvements that have resulted from your work with us?

I lost a stubborn 10lbs post-pregnancy weight and got my body fat percentage down to an all time low. I learned how to confidently handle weights in the gym and augment my cardio workouts with effective strength training.

What exactly have we done to contribute to the outcome you wanted?

AST has helped me to understand how to use food and exercise to be lean and strong. I no longer think about “healthy eating” as cutting out ice cream or only eating salads. Now I think about macro nutrients and how to eat the largest portions of high quality and nutrient dense food to fuel my body. Also, I never knew how to “lift” before coming to AST. I, like many women, was afraid of bulking up, so I avoided lifting and focused my exercise on cardio. Learning how to properly lift has been such a confidence builder for me, and I have seen first hand from my results that lifting gets me leaner and more fit than cardio ever did.

What type of people would most benefit from working with AST?

I am a working Mom with a job that requires a lot of travel and client entertainment. In the past I thought of those things as barriers to being fit. AST helped me by accommodating my travel schedule, having workouts limited to 30 minutes and available early in the morning, and giving me nutrition tips and guidelines to follow even when eating out and traveling. AST truly understands the complex lives of working professionals and parents.

Approaching 40, I found myself in the worst shape of my life. I needed to shake things up with a new approach, motivation and a plan.

Knowledge, accountability and flexibility… are key factors for setting myself up for success! AST checks those boxes for me.

The biggest hurdle for me is nutrition. AST knows that without addressing this component of your fitness you won’t be successful. Zach has extensive knowledge in this area and helped me design an eating plan that is manageable for my lifestyle. I’m not perfect but coupled with the BioSig evaluations every two weeks it provides the extra accountability I need to stay on track! There are even “friendly” competitions throughout the year to provide that added push!

The group workouts are challenging but tailored to me. They track my progress and motivate me to go further. The team is flexible to help me succeed! They work with my busy schedule and even injuries (did I mention I’m 40:) Training and nutrition are their passions. They care about their clients and it shows with their dedication to my success.

I’ve been training with AST for 9 months now and they are not only changing my body but the way I approach fitness & nutrition as a lifestyle. I’ve lost 15+ lbs and almost 10% body fat. For me, it’s not about the number on the scale. It’s about being strong, feeling healthy and living a positive balanced life. It’s challenging and you have to put in the work but seeing results is the motivation I need to keep going!

I’m a work in progress but it’s no longer just about the finish line for me. With AST I’m excited about the journey and my potential to be in the best shape of my life!
